DR. ED D'SOUZA TALK
Tuesday, October 29th
Today I had the honour to speak to Ed D'Souza, one of our Critical Practice professors here at WSA. He has created a project for osloBIENNALEN which asks the question "How far can a wrecked car move in a car-free city?". The project, called Migrant Car, is a sculpture that portrays a 3D photograph of a crashed car reproduced in full size, wrapped around a wooden framework. The car is moved around the car free area of Oslo. The project brings attention to the fact that there are many borders that cannot be crossed by car due to power struggles and politics.
Dr. Ed D'Souza Talk: Bio
It is interesting to hear about the topic of Human Migration from someone who has studied it in more depth than I did. I explained to him what the current project is and how it works, and he was able to help me find a start. In the next phase, we will need to start coming up with ideas, and while I did manage to get a significant number of information on Human Migration, I was concerned I wouldn't be able to come up with three distinct ideas.

Dr. D'Souza helped me a lot when he suggested I break down my research into pieces that have stood out to me, experiences, feelings, quotes, objects carried with migrants in the process. This approach is very useful, as it will allow me to identify what I liked and what I want to take forward. Otherwise, I would have probably come out with three narrative-driven games about a child trying to cross a border. This approach is very refreshing, and it allows me to zoom in from human migration to specific parts that I find interesting and worth looking into.

This is the theme break down:

Dr. Ed D'Souza Talk: Welcome
I found this talk very useful and I am so glad I got to speak to a professional in the domain. His thinking and experience will help me in the next phase, when we start creating. Having these written down will help me come up with distinct ideas from distinct point of interest I choose. I am thankful to Adam for arranging this talk and of course, to Dr. D'Souza for sparing his time to hear about my project and guide me in the next steps in my final year.
