UI/X Development
The overall goal of the game is to give the player an immersive experience, and I believe this starts from the beginning of the app, the Opening screen, to the last ‘Exit button'. For this, I firstly looked into UX (User Experience), as I think this is where the UI should start from. I learnt something from the The UX book : process and guidelines for ensuring a quality user experience / by Rex Hartson, Pardha S. Pyla. Hartson, Rex. and I did more research on shapes, colours, sizes, fonts, whitespace, sequence of cognition, other tips from graphic designers and how these affect a user's experience.
I've then been able to make a broad idea of the field works and I started designing the UI. In the GDD Development Sketchbook, pages 61 - 69 you can see specifically how the design of the game interface buttons has been affected and influenced by different factors. Whenever I finished an object such as button, or page, I tried the design on my phone, to see if it works or not and what adjustments need to be made.
For the pages, however, I created a couple of layouts in continuation of the buttons designs in my sketchbook. I would need six pages, including the In Game page. I then tried to connect these between them in the most logical and natural way for the player. There haven’t been extremely different variation yet, but the changes I have made include swapping the position of the “Exit” button with “Menu”, so the Exit (‘Back’ button points at the previous page, not the next); changing the sizes of the buttons. Please see page UI/X Design for details on the final screen mock-ups.
